Noctowl

Noctowl, The Owl Pokémon. It unfailingly catches prey in darkness. They owe their success to superior vision that allows them to see in minimal light, and to their supple and silent wings. When it needs to think, it rotates its head 180 degrees to sharpen its intellectual power. Its eyes are specially adapted. They concentrate even faint light and enable it to see in the dark.

Battle Moveset

A Good Moveset for Noctowl would have to be this:

Attacks:

Hypnosis
Psychic
Reflect
Toxic / Whirlwind

Items Attached:

Leftovers

Preferred Nature:

Calm

Preferred Trait:

Insomnia

Strategy Using Noctowl

Noctowl is a rather poor UU/NU Pokémon. The best thing it has going for it is Hypnosis which, with it's 60% chance to land, can put an opponent to sleep. The general idea of this set is to abuse Spikes and force switches, therefore it'll need support from a solid Spiker, which in the UU/NU environment are few in number. Hypnosis will be a guarantied switch and when combined with Whirlwind could lead to several switches while leaving Noctowl untouched. Since Clerics in UU/NU are also few in number Toxic can work for forces switches but isn't guarantied like Whirlwind and stopped by the many Poison and Steel types as well as previously statused Pokémon.

Insomnia is the only trait worth using on Noctowl. It'll give Noctowl a free switch in into sleep inducing attacks and allows it to be the team's Sleep status blocker.

EV Corner:

EVs: 240 HP / 162 Def / 108 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)

Noctowl has a surprisingly good HP stat as well as passable Special Defence and passable Physical Defence when aided by Reflect, so a defensive set-up with the option of minor EV investment into Speed and/or Special Attack suits it best.

Other Optional Moves

Shadow Ball, Return, Double-Edge, Hidden Power [Flying], Substitute, Mirror Move. Shadow Ball is just a generally good attack that'll do decent damage against Psychic types who'll block your own Psychic attack (as well as to Banette who can block your Hypnosis). Return, Double-Edge and Hidden Power [Flying] all gain STAB and are options for a physical offence, although Noctowl's physical attack is too low to make much use of them. It can get 101 Subs but they don't serve much purpose. Mirror Move is novelty but workable, but too situational.

Strategy Against Noctowl

Noctowl isn't particularly offensive and relies on stalling tactics and crippling attacks rather than direct damage. Hypnosis is a staple, so Vital Spirit and Insomnia Pokémon are good choices to switch into it, Hypno especially. The best means of taking down Noctowl is to target it's weakness: Electric, Rock and Ice. It has good HP, decent Special Defence and Reflect so don't expect to be taking it down with ease without a strong sweeper.

Contest Moveset

A good Contest Moveset for Noctowl would have to be this for the Smart Contest best with Calm, Gentle, Careful, Sassy Nature:

Aerial Ace

Animé Appearences

Noctowl has had a fair few Animé Appearences, only significant ones are listed. First Ash & Co. met up with a researcher who was researching an odd coloured Noctowl. Ash ended up capturing it and used it in his travels through Johto including his Ecruteak Gym Battle with Morty, his first Blackthorn Gym Battle with Clair and the Johto Leagu against Harrison. Other than that it was usually used against Team Rocket
