Altaria

Altaria, The Humming Pokémon. It dances and wheels through the sky among billowing, cotton-like clouds. By singing melodies in its crystal-clear voice, it makes its listeners experience dreamy wonderment. Its wings are like cotton clouds. It catches updrafts with its buoyant wings and soars way up into the wild blue yonder. It launches intensely hot fireballs from its mouth. If you hear a beautiful melody trilling deep among mountains far from people, it is Altaria's humming.

Battle Moveset

A Good Moveset for Altaria would have to be this:

Attacks:

Dragon Claw Haze/Roar Sing/Fire Blast Rest

Items Attached:

Leftovers

Preferred Nature:

Calm

Strategy Using Altaria

Altaria is one of the better UU walls available. Both defences are above average and it has solid HP to deal with. Unfortunately, it has limited offence and will be dealing minimal damage and will have difficulty beating things one on one. It’s purpose is best served as a Special Wall, a Hazer (or PHazer if you want it for a team with Spikes) and using Sing to immobilise a Pokémon. Of course, some would opt to go with the added Special Attack for coverage however it’s use won’t see much use. Cure-rest is Altaria’s only means of self-healing and is rather effective, although it telegraphs a free turn to your opponent and requires a decent amount of prediction to pull off without exposing your team.

EV Corner:

Calm Nature (+Sp. Def, -Atk)

Distribute enough EVs for 300 Special Defense, 352 HP and then max either Defense or Special Attack, depending on personal preference. A few Speed EVs would also be useful, depending on what you want to outrun and how many EVs you're willing to distribute.

Other Optional Sets:

Altaria @ Leftovers
- Perish Song
- Sing
- Protect
- Rest

This set has to be used in conjuncture with a Baton passing Smeargle, Umbreon or Ariados. Once the trap has been passed have Altaria use Perish Song and then stall with Protect and Sing until your opponent is down to their last perish count. At that time to switch out to avoid losing your Altaria. The set is difficult to pull off multiple times but it can be done with some skilful play.

EVs: Enough for 352 HP and focus the rest in Special Defense and Defense. A Calm or Bold nature is best suited.

Altaria @ Leftovers
- Hidden Power [Flying]
- Earthquake
- Dragon Dance
- Fire Blast/Steel Wing

An inferior Dragon Dancer in comparison to the likes of Salamence and Dragonite but it’s still an option. Fire Blast can 2KO Skarmory with enough Special Attack EVs for Altaria’s used in OU while Steel Wing can deal damage to the ever common Solrock who lingers a lot in UU.

EVs: Enough speed for 200 or 220 for outrunning the likes of Zapdos and Salamence after one Dragon Dance, Max Attack with an Adamant nature and put the rest of the EVs into HP.

Altaria @ Choice Band
- Hidden Power [Flying]/Aerial Ace
- Earthquake
- Hidden Power [Rock]/Steel Wing
- Rest

Natural Cure adds to Altaria’s ability to get into play with ease and Cure-Rest gives Altaria a quick means of self-recovery for when it’s weakened.

EVs: Enough speed for 240, Max Attack with Adamant and he rest of the EVs into HP.

Altaria @ Leftovers
- Dragon Claw/Flamethrower/Pursuit/Ice Beam/Hidden Power [Grass]
- Dragon Claw/Flamethrower/Pursuit/Ice Beam/Hidden Power [Grass]
- Dragon Claw/Flamethrower/Pursuit/Ice Beam/Hidden Power [Grass]
- Rest

Altaria has a sub-par Special Attack stat but with it’s decent Special move pool it can be done. Once more Cure-Rest is a necessity for self recovery.

EVs: Similarly to the CB set, Altaria needs enough speed EVs for a 240 stat, Max Special Attack with Modest and the rest in HP.

Strategy Against Altaria

Altaria is hard to OHKO and short of STABed Ice Beams and STABed + CBed Rock Attacks not much has a chance. It’ll almost always get 2KOed by Ice Beam and Rock Attack, STABed/CBed or not. As far as handling Altaria, most offensive Altaria’s can’t do much damage without stat boosting or super effectives so all that’s required is avoiding allowing Altaria to set up and avoid allowing it to hit with super effectives. I has access to Sing which can temporarily disable a Pokémon so watch out for that and it can Perish Sing, although by the time you realise it’ll probably be too late.

Contest Moveset

A good Contest Moveset for Altaria would have to be this for the Cool Contest best with Lonely, Adament, Naughty or Brave Nature:

Attacks:

Aerial Ace
Hyperbeam
Dragon Dance
Rock smash

Items Attached:

Red Scarf

Strategy Using Altaria

If you do the attacks in this following order you should have very few problems; 1st - Aerial ace, 2nd - Dragon dance, 3rd - Rock smash, 4th - Aerial Ace, 5th - Hyper beam
