Floette

Eternal Flower Floette, the Single Bloom Pokémon. This rare Floette holds a plant that died out in ancient times. The Pokémon is said to harbor an incredible power.

Overview

AZ’s beloved partner from X and Y is finally available and quite the divergence from not only others of its species, but Florges as well. Eternal Flower Floette has a near identical BST to Florges, but is far more offensive in nature, leading to a radically different playstyle. Base 125 Special Attack immediately stands out, meeting a powerful standard set by many other attackers and ensures that Eternal Flower Floette always hits hard. This takes on new meaning when looking at Eternal Flower Floette’s signature move Light of Ruin. An attack with a base power just short of Head Smash, Light of Ruin allows Eternal Flower Floette to grab knockouts out of nowhere, especially given the wide coverage of Fairy STAB, and easily usable given it does not mandate a recharge turn. Eternal Flower Floette has not deviated too far from its roots either, with a solid base 128 Special Defense enabling Eternal Flower Floette to soak up a special attack or two especially thanks to the wide array of resistances provided by Fairy.

Yet in other matters, Eternal Flower Floette would have benefited from deviating from Florges a bit more. Just like Florges, Eternal Flower Floette remains physically frail at a paltry base 67 Defense, allowing physical attackers of all stripes to easily remove Eternal Flower Floette. To say nothing of the massive recoil Light of Ruin induces, making Eternal Flower Floette sadly easy to remove after a single use if it doesn’t knock itself out first, greatly limiting Eternal Flower Floette’s defensive potential. While Eternal Flower Floette’s admittedly decent base 92 Speed means this isn’t as easy as it would be with Florges, Eternal Flower Floette still misses the base 100 benchmark set by many Mega Evolutions and prominent attackers. The complete lack of answers for Steel types and indirect coverage for Fire types makes such Pokémon difficult for Eternal Flower Floette to surmount means even Eternal Flower Floette’s best selling point its offense, is rather one note, leaving Eternal Flower Floette predictable with not enough power to make up the difference. Not to say Eternal Flower Floette is without merit over other Fairy types. The sheer power of Light of Ruin must be respected with all but the bulkiest of targets sent reeling allowing for instant pressure that is hard to come by from a non-Mega Pokémon.
Positives
Base 125 Special Attack is fantastic, giving Eternal Flower Floette a respectable degree of power even before investment.
Light of Ruin is an amazing move that removes or compromises anything hit by it.
Base 128 Special Defense is quite solid, allowing Eternal Flower Floette to tank a special attack or two.

Negatives
Base 67 Defense is quite poor, and an obvious weakness for opponents to exploit.
Unable to handle Steel types due to lack of coverage.
Both abilities do nothing in Singles.

Movesets

Lone Flower in the Wind

-Light of Ruin
-Moonblast
-Psychic
-Trick
Ability: Flower Veil
Item: Choice Scarf
EVs and Nature:
2 HP / 32 SAtk / 32 Spe
Timid Nature

Scarf Eternal Flower Floette is valuable as a surprise tool for those expecting its much more threatening Mega Evolution, getting the jump on targets that Mega Floette cannot outspeed and remove them from play. Light of Ruin greatly aids in this task, with its massive base power making it easy for Eternal Flower Floette to grab OHKO’s on most fast targets which tend to be on the frailer side, though the imperfect accuracy can be maddening. Moonblast is secondary STAB for when one does not want to have Eternal Flower Floette knock itself out or risk a miss with Light of Ruin. Psychic is coverage into Poison type that otherwise tank Eternal Flower Floette’s Fairy STABs with ease, though note it Eternal Flower Floette misses the OHKO on most non Sneasler Poison types including Venusaur, Glimmora, Gengar and Mega Victreebel and thus will either be used to compromise such targets or for a revenge KO when they are weakened. Trick rounds out the set as a potent form of disruption against standard walls like Corviknight, Toxapex, and Slowking that could otherwise outlast Eternal Flower Floette.

EVs and Items:
Max Speed and Special Attack are recommended here as Eternal Flower Floette needs to outrun and OHKO as many Pokémon as possible. Timid allows Eternal Flower Floette to outrun base 150s like Mega Aerodactyl and Mega Alakazam as well as max Speed Dragon Danced Mega Gyarados that are missed by going Modest. Modest nature can be invaluable in securing OHKOs against the likes of Max HP Archaludon, Mega Aerodactyl and Mega Charizard X, OHKOs that would be impossible or easily missed otherwise. Choice Scarf is recommended as the item as that pushes Eternal Flower Floette’s speed to the point where it outspeed basically every unboosted threat and a good number of opposing Scarf users as well. Conversely it is difficult to recommend any other item given how much Eternal Flower Floette is outclassed by its own Mega Evolution. If running a Calm Mind set, Leftovers or Sitrus Berry for healing while setting up could be useful but as noted, Mega Floette does that so much better.

Partners:
Eternal Flower Floette desperately needs allies to check Fairy resistances so it can more freely spam Light of Ruin and Moonblast without fearing a resisted pivot. Mega Starmie is a popular option, breaking Fire and Poison types with its STABs and softening up many more targets into Light of Ruin range with its fast Flip Turn. Mega Starmie in turn values Scarf Eternal Flower Floette’s matchup into Dark types, especially Meowscarada and Kingambit that otherwise give it trouble. Rotom-Heat is another strong option thanks to its Overheat and Electric STAB dealing with most Steel types like Aegislash and Corviknight on top of the Electric weak Mega Charizard Y, while softening up Kingambit. Garchomp is another reliable option, its swift Earthquakes wrecking most Steel, Fire and Poison types.

Countering Eternal Flower Floette

While Light of Ruin is an incredible move, it does not address Eternal Flower Floette’s lack of coverage or abject frailty.

Fairy resistances are consistently the best way to limit Eternal Flower Floette’s damage, as it really wants to get fast knock outs with Light of Ruin.

Steel types are by far the worst given Eternal Flower Floette’s lack of coverage into them. Scizor and Mega Lucario especially render Scarf Eternal Flower Floette’s improved speed moot with their priority Bullet Punch which will OHKO in the case of the former and a coin flip in the case of the latter. Aegislash easily tanks Light of Ruin while OHKOing back with Iron Head or rarely doing the same with Flash Cannon. Corviknight is also only 3HKOd by Light of Ruin and can 2HKO back with Brave Bird or Iron Head. While Mega Skarmory can OHKO with Iron Head while taking less than 50% from Light of Ruin, base Skarmory is 2HKO’d by Modest Light of Ruin and can only 2HKO back with Iron Head or Brave Bird, the latter it struggles to fit.

As for Poison types, Galarian-Slowking all but counters Eternal Flower Floette given its insane special bulk and neutrality to Psychic with the latter’s only saving grace being Trick Choice Scarf. Other Poison types like Venusaur, Gengar, Toxapex and Glimmora must worry about switching into a Psychic, but Eternal Flower Floette does fail to OHKO them from full and thus they are favored to win the exchange if they switch into a Fairy attack or if Eternal Flower Floette is not locked into Psychic.

For Fire types, Mega Charizard Y, Mega Delphox and Volcarona all soak up Light of Ruin easily due to their high Special Defense and easily outlast Eternal Flower Floette thanks to Light of Ruin’s recoil. Max HP Rotom-Heat is 3HKOd by of Ruin, but needs to Thunderbolt into Overheat to 2HKO back. Specially bulky Skeledirge is 4HKOd by Light of Ruin, but only 3HKOs back with Torch Song.

While Scarf Eternal Flower Floette is very difficult to outspeed, methods of bypassing that speed can easily exploit its horrid defense. Mega Aerodactyl is notable for placing Scarf Eternal Flower Floette into a tough position where Eternal Flower Floette can outspeed if Timid, but needs Mega Aerodactyl to be chipped to get the knock out, while Mega Aerodactyl can OHKO with Dual Wingbeat and will OHKO with Iron Head. Mega Alakazam cannot get the OHKO naturally, but is unlikely to be OHKO’d by Timid Eternal Flower Floette and the recoil from Light of Ruin and Psyshock will finish Eternal Flower Floette off. As for priority attackers, while not great with dealing with Eternal Flower Floette at full, are great at picking it off from Light of Ruin recoil. Jolly Mamoswine deals 31-37% with Ice Shard, while Mimikyu does 27-32% with Shadow Sneak, Mega Lopunny does 33-39% with Fake Out, Mega Kangaskhan does 37-45% with Fake Out, and Adamant Dragonite does 47-55% with Extreme Speed while capable of surviving Light of Ruin if Multiscale is intact.

Mega Corner

Mega Floette, the Single Bloom Pokémon. The Eternal Flower has absorbed all the energy from Mega Evolution. The flower now attacks enemies on its own.

Overview

Of all things to be added in Legends Z-A Mega Floette was certainly a surprise. This surprise certainly does not disappoint either, as Mega Floette stands as one of the premier examples of single type offense currently available. This is in large part thanks to its massive base 155 Special Attack eclipsing even many legendary Pokémon. This along with Calm Mind would be enough for Mega Floette to see consideration for power alone, but Mega Floette was also gifted Xerneas’ signature ability in Fairy Aura, giving Mega Floette a significant power boost on what is already one of the strongest attacking types in the game. Mega Floette can make the most of this power too thanks to its base 102 Speed tying with the famed Garchomp which is already valued for speed creeping the numerous Pokémon sitting at base 100. If all this power wasn’t enough, Mega Floette boasts great defensive utility, thanks to its massive base 148 Special Defense, allowing it to soak up Special Attacks with ease, especially given the strength of Fairy as a defensive typing as well. Add in impressive sustain from STAB Fairy Aura Draining Kiss and the defensive boosting of Clam Mind and Mega Floette can be a formidable special wall.

Some care must be taken in using Mega Floette though. While its Special Defense is great, the same cannot be said for Mega Floette’s physical Defense, sitting at an improved but still unimpressive base 87, allowing any faster opponent an easy way to remove Mega Floette. The fact that these improved defenses are only around when Floette Mega Evolves further constrains matters, limiting Mega Floette’s ability as a defensive pivot until it has hit the field at least once. Furthermore, there is no lack of naturally faster attacker, especially Mega Evolutions that can prey upon that low Defense. Not to mention the speed tie with Garchomp who one of the current premier attackers, leaving Mega Floette in an awkward position where losing the coin flip can be disastrous. Even when on offense, Mega Floette has issues. It has no way of dealing with Steel types in its moveset beyond outmuscling them with boosts. While it is fortuitous for Mega Floette that many popular Steel types like Mega Lucario, Kingambit and Archaludon lack Fairy resistance due to their second typing, Mega Floette still struggles against the other Steel types that don’t have this issue. Fire types can also be problematic for Mega Floette thanks to their Fairy resistance allowing them to soak up Mega Floette’s primary STAB. Mega Floette is still an incredible blend of offense, defense and speed, whose bloom can signify victory if its very clear checks are removed.
Positives
Base 155 Special Attack is frankly absurd and combined with Fairy Aura gives Mega Floette the strongest Fairy attacks in the series..
Base 148 Special Defense is incredible, and with the recovery from Draining Kiss and boosting from Calm Mind, Mega Floette can outlast almost any special attacker..
Base 102 Speed is fantastic, getting the jump on just about every defensive Pokémon as well as clearing the base 100 Speed many Mega Evolutions sit at..

Negatives
74/87 physical bulk is underwhelming, making it easy for physical attackers to pick off Mega Floette.
Inability to hit Steel types makes them consistent walls for Mega Floette.
Presence of numerous newly introduced faster Mega Evolutions cuts down on the value of Mega Floette’s speed.

Movesets

Solitary Bloom

-Calm Mind
-Draining Kiss
-Moonblast
-Psychic
Ability: Flower Veil -> Fairy Aura
Item: Floettite
EVs and Nature:
2 HP / 32 SAtk / 32 Spe
Timid Nature

Mega Floette is a great game ending cleaner once opposing Steel types have been removed. Calm Mind just accentuates this and with Mega Floette’s phenomenal special bulk has no issue in finding setup opportunities against opposing Special Attackers. Come in on a special attacker, Calm Mind up and then go on the offensive. Calm Mind does so much work for Mega Floette, making it near impossible to OHKO with special attacks while making its own attacks that hard to resist. Draining Kiss pairs incredibly well with Calm Mind, its damage obscene thanks to Mega Floette’s incredible special attack and Fairy aura, which in turn gives Mega Floette a lot of recovery from the damage inflicted. Moonblast is Mega Floette’s primary damaging STAB and after a Calm Mind can OHKO even targets as specially bulky as opposing offensive Mega Floette, mandating resists to safely stomach the blow. Psychic rounds out the set as coverage for Poison types like Glimmora, Gengar, and Mega Venusaur who could otherwise survive Mega Floette’s STABs and threaten back with their own potent Poison STABs.

EVs and Items:
Standard attacker spread of max Special Attack and Speed is recommended for this set. It is hard to give up max Speed and Timid nature given Mega Floette speed ties with the currently extremely popular Garchomp, whose STAB Earthquakes do severe damage to Mega Floette if it loses the speed tie. However, the popularity of Choice Scarf on Garchomp can make this distinction moot. More defensive spreads can also be considered if one wants to emphasize Calm Mind setup or to survive specific blows. 20 HP ensures that Mega Scizor and Mega Gengar cannot OHKO with Bullet Punch and Sludge Bomb respectively. 32 HP and 29 Defense ensures Mega Floette is only 3HKO’d by Jolly Garchomp’s Earthquake, while Adamant Garchomp requires 32 HP and 30 Defense with a Bold nature for the same. As with all Mega Evolutions, item is locked to Floettite..

Partners:
Answers for opposing Steel types are mandatory for Mega Floette given its only other recourse is to muscle through them with Calm Mind boosts, a tall order given it is likely trying to survive a barrage of super effective STABs while doing so. Ironically IronPress Corviknight and Skarmory work well at this role, with few Steel types possessing the coverage to effectively deal with them, on top of their dealing with the physical attackers that Mega Floette struggles with, like Mega Lucario, Scizor, Scarf Garchomp, Mega Lopunny, etc. However, they cannot deal with the Fire types that Mega Floette also struggles with. Volcarona is another excellent anti-Steel example that also does well into opposing physical attackers thanks to its Flame Body and potentially Will-O-Wisp ruining them. Mamoswine also works well, offering the valued Fairy-Ground offensive combination with Mega Floette and is great at picking off foes that barely hang on from Mega Floette’s assault with Ice Shard, on top of threatening Meowscarada and Garchomp. Basculegion also deserves note thanks to it resisting Fire, Poison and Steel, all three types Mega Floette strugglse with, while being a great clean up artist with Adaptability Aqua Jet for more offensive teams and Last Respects for defensive ones. Basculegion in turn draws in Dark attack that Mega Floette can soak up with ease.

Other Options:
Light of Ruin is a massive delete button, cleaving even through frail resists like Mega Gengar after a Calm Mind boost, but the recoil means that Mega Floette is liable to knock itself out.
Chilling Water addresses Mega Floette’s issues with physical attackers, making it that much harder to remove. Not so much for addressing Fire types as it is so weak that the resisted Fairy Aura Moonblast is not far behind and is no help into Mega Charizard Y whose Drought weakens Chilling Water.
Charm can completely invalidate physical attackers from dealing with Mega Floette.

Doubles and VGC Options

While Mega Floette is a powerful, albeit flawed attacker in Singles, it takes on a wholly new dimension in Doubles where Mega Floette’s partners are wholly capable of addressing every issue Mega Floette has. Speed control, and damage mitigation are common to VGC teams and popular picks from both roles are more than capable of holding the coverage needed to handle Mega Floette’s poor matchups. In return, Mega Floette threatens obscene damage of both the single target and spread varieties and with how potent Fairy is as an offensive type, Mega Floette is always threatening at least one Pokémon on the field. Furthermore, Doubles formats tend to run slower than singles, making it that much easier for Mega Floette to apply offensive pressure. Mega Floette is shockingly flexible as well, with its special bulk and Draining Kiss enabling a durable playstyle for grind games or going all out offensive with Light of Ruin to delete opponents as quickly as possible. Add in the fact that the current top Poison and Steel types in Sneasler, Kingambit and Archaludon lack the vital resistance to Fairy and Mega Floette is well positioned to blast entire teams apart. However, success comes at a price and with Mega Floette’s dominance, trainers have begun preparing explicitly for it. The second best Mega Evolution in Mega Charizard Y is a difficult opponent for Mega Floette, thanks to its great Special Defense, Fairy resistance and searing offense, to say nothing of other Megas like Mega Delphox, Mega Gengar and Mega Venusaur. The fact that Mega Floette has flourished despite running single typed offense speaks volumes to its power and should be planned as a result.

Calming Bloom

-Calm Mind
-Dazzling Gleam
-Moonblast
-Protect
Ability: Flower Veil -> Fairy Aura
Item: Floettite
EVs and Nature:
32 HP / 9 Def / 6 SAtk / 19 Spe
Modest Nature

This is a bulky attacker Mega Floette, using its good base defenses to absorb hits, setup and hit hard back. Calm Mind is amazing for Mega Floette, pushing its already great Special Attack to the moon and making it nigh impossible to remove with Special Attacks after a single boost. Dazzling Gleam is a staple on almost every Mega Floette set, able to threaten obscene damage, if not a KO after a Calm Mind boost to at least one of the opposing Pokémon. Moonblast is more concentrated damage for must remove threats or in the case of Wide Guard and will easily get OHKOs on anything that doesn't resist. Protect rounds out the set being the best move in doubles, punishing focus fire attempts, blocking Fake Out, stalling for allied setup, stalling out detrimental field conditions and more, the utility of Protect is endless.

Stats and nature are purely up for preference. The given HP and Defense is enough for Mega Floette to survive Sneasler's Dire Claw, or Adaptablity Basculegion's Wave Crash, while the Speed is enough to outrun Adamant Excadrill out of Sand (or in Sand with Tailwind support), with everything else going into power. More Defense investment can be considered, up to 17 Defense being enough to stomach an Adamant Kingambit's Iron Head, or 5 Defense if running Bold nature. Going pure offensive with full investment in Speed, Timid Nature and Special Attack is also a viable option, allowing Mega Floette to speed tie with Garchomp while dealing as much damage as possible, especially if running Light of Ruin. Flower Veil is preferred for the ability. If running Mega Floette with Grass type partners like Meowscarada or Torterra, Eternal Floette can protect them from Intimidate with Flower Veil before Mega Evolving.

Preferred Partners & Other Options:
Allies that can address Mega Floette's unimpressive Defense are greatly appreciated. Incineroar is unsurprisingly king at this, with its Intimidate and Parting Shot making Floette incredibly difficult to break through while Flare Blitz hands many Steel types that given Mega Floette trouble. Maushold is another good option, making Mega Floette bulkier in general with Friend Guard, forcefully opening setup opportunities with Follow Me and even setting up surprise KOs from Mega Floette's Dazzling Gleam with Super Fang. Answers to Steel and Fire types in general are appreciated given Mega Floette's struggles into Steel resists. Aerodactyl handles the Charizards and Mega Delphox just fine thanks to Rock Slide threatening severe damage while providing speed control with Tailwind and acts as a soft check to Mega Venusaur with Dual Wingbeat. Garchomp is as always a solid option, offering potent Ground STAB that compliments Mega Floette's incredibly well, though it must resort to non STAB Rock Slide/Stone Edge for Mega Charizard Y and Mega Delphox. Draining Kiss is a strong option on bulkier Mega Floettes, giving Mega Floette incredible staying power while threatening big damage at the same time, but means either dropping the instant KO potential of Moonblast or the sheer utility of Protect. Light of Ruin is an obscenely powerful option for annihilating opponents, but the recoil is brutal and does not mesh well with defensive sets. Psychic is Mega Floette's best option into Mega Venusaur who otherwise walls Mega Floette out fairly hard.

Countering Mega Floette

Mega Floette’s claim to fame being overwhelming Fairy offense gives it very clear and exploitable weaknesses as does its defensive profile.

Fairy resists are very important for dealing with Mega Floette as defensive sets cannot recover as easily with Draining Kiss which can otherwise mandate getting an OHKO.

Steel types are a consistent problem for the Floette line given their lone neutral coverage into them is the rather weak Chilling Water. Scizor and its Mega possibly the best examples, their Mega capable of OHKOing offensive Mega Floette regardless of speed and in base 2HKOing even the most physically bulky Mega Floette with Bullet Punch while not being OHKO’d by +1 Light of Ruin. Mega Lucario, while unable to tank even an unboosted Moonblast also does horrific damage with Bullet Punch, dealing 75% at minimum to offensive Mega Floette and can easily pick off a chipped one. Physical Aegislash can tank Mega Floette’s best in Shield Form and OHKO all but the bulkiest of Mega Floette with Iron Head. Sand Rush Excadrill struggles to tank a boosted Light of Ruin but easily outspeeds and 1-2HKOs. Corviknight needs Iron Head and a Light of Ruin or +1 Moonblast can 2HKO Max HP Corviknight but Corviknight easily 2HKO’s offensive Mega Floette. Mega Excadrill is 2HKO'd by Light of Ruin, but otherwise is a complete nightmare, outspeeding and OHKOing with Iron Head.

If lacking Psychic, Poison types are also a serious problem for Mega Floette. Galarian-Slowking especially given it doesn't even fear Psychic, and can shut off Draining Kiss with Psychic Noise, but is reliant on Sludge Bomb Poison or Toxic to break through Calm Mind Mega Floette. Mega Venusaur is a prominent example, able to launch brutal Sludge Bombs and simply outlast Mega Floette between its numerous forms of healing while still capable of 2HKOing even through a Calm Mind. Mega Glimmora isn’t as bulky, and is unfortunately slower than Mega Floette but is unlikely to be OHKO’d even by +1 Light of Ruin, while solidly 2HKOing even defensive sets after a Calm Mind boost and heavily favored to OHKO if Mega Floette doesn’t boost. Sneasler cannot switch in at all but can easily OHKO offensive Mega Floette with Dire Claw. Mega Victreebel ironically wants to get hit with Psychic, though Mega Floette is placed in an awkward position of either disarming Innards Out with a resisted Fairy attack and eating a brutal Poison STAB or being crippled by Stun Spore. Max HP 2 SDef Leftovers Toxapex is 3HKO'd by Modest max Special Attack Light of Ruin or a +1 uninvested Moonblast, but otherwise places Mega Floette on a timer with Toxic and can wipe boosts with Haze.

The last of the Fairy resists, Fire types can also prove problematic, though the current pool of Pokémon is lacking viable physical attackers that can tank a hit. Mega Charizard Y and Mega Delphox are obnoxious for Mega Floette thanks to their Fire typing and enormous Special Defense. Mega Delphox is better off of the two thanks to naturally outspeeding Mega Floette and able to strike at its weaker Defense with STAB Psyshock. Mega Charizard Y is slower, but deals horrific damage with Weather Ball and all but OHKOs offensive Mega Floette and can 2HKO after a bit of chip damage.

Given Mega Floette’s ludicrous special defense, if not using a Fairy resist, physical attackers are generally recommended for picking off a weakened Floette, a task made much easier if an offensive set that just used Light of Ruin. Scarf Adaptability Basculegion readily outspeeds and deals 65% minimum to a defensive Mega Floette while OHKOing offensive ones. Last Respects with 2 allies fainted deals 80% minimum to defensive Mega Floette but still misses the OHKO. Adamant Mega Lopunny can Fake Out Mega Floette for about 20% for some free chip damage and can OHKO offensive Mega Floette with Mega Kick, though a miss would be fatal. Scarf Garchomp reliably 2HKOs all but the bulkiest of Mega Floette in singles, but needs to get that KO or get rocked in return. Roseli Berry Garchomp can act as a lure for an unboosted Mega Floette though a +1 Moonblast is massively favored to KO through the berry.
