Delphox, the Fox Pokémon. Using psychic power, it generates a fiery vortex of 5,400 degrees Fahrenheit, incinerating foes swept into this whirl of flame.
Overview
Delphox’s return to Champions has seen dazzling success with its Mega Evolution catapulting the line to higher heights than ever before. These accolades have not directly translated down to base Delphox who remains a rather underwhelming Pokémon. This is due to its lackluster defenses. While base 100 Special Defense is serviceable, it is not enough to make up for its poor base 72 Defense leaving Delphox quickly overwhelmed by most assaults. While Delphox does have the spells to address its defenses in Mystic Fire, Calm Mind and Will-O-Wisp, its lack of recovery means that any damage done to it will stick and bring it down sooner rather than later. Generational power creep has also hit Delphox quite hard, with many Mega Evolutions and staple offensive threats outrunning Delphox with ease, and its Special Attack, while good, falls short of many contemporary Fire and Psychic types, especially Mega Evolutions. This is especially painful when looking at Delphox’s niche as a Expanding Force spammer, a role that its Mega Evolution cannot fulfill. For despite Delphox having the Fire spells necessary to melt the Psychic resistant Steel types that can slow down the strategy it just pales in power to the likes of Mega Gardevoir who possesses the same Fire Fairy coverage that Delphox usually wields to handle such threats.
If Delphox’s defenses were better this could be a different story given its other traits. Base 104 Speed is still a good Speed tier, outrunning Garchomp who itself is valued for being annoyingly fast. While Delphox’s initial Special Attack isn’t anything to write home about, it is not negligible either and can easily address power issues with Calm Mind or Nasty Plot. Delphox can make the most of this not only with the always valuable Fire STAB, but its dizzying array of coverage options and secondary STAB, with Dazzling Gleam, Focus Blast, Grass Knot, Shadow Ball, Hex and Scorching Sands able to keep opponents guessing. If power isn’t enough, Delphox has quite the array of utility spells as well, including Will-O-Wisp, Future Sight, screens, Wish, and Encore to keep opponents guessing. All these spells mean little if the caster is not up to the task and with strict competition from even non Mega Evolved fire types like Volcarona, Rotom-Heat, and Armarouge, Delphox’s conjurations can come off more as parlor tricks..
Positives
Base 104 Speed is great, getting the jump on just about every defensive Pokémon as well as clearing the base 100 Speed many Mega Evolutions sit at.
Amazingly diverse movepool, with plenty of tools to aid allies and cripple foes as well as almost all the special coverage Delphox could want.
Good base 114 Special Attack and boosting options ensures Delphox can hit hard.
Negatives
75/72/100 defenses do not make for a sturdy Pokémon, allowing Delphox to be easily removed in one to two blows.
Outclassed by other Fire and Psychic types that can boast better power, speed or both like Armarouge and Mega Charizard Y.

Timid Nature
Delphox makes an excellent member on Psychic Surge teams looking to make the most out of Expanding Force thanks to its Garchomp eclipsing base 104 Speed and Fire STAB to handle the Psychic resistant Steel types that are endemic to many teams. Expanding Force is the star of the show, being a base 120 STAB attack in Psychic Terrain before accounting for the terrain boost. This is an obscenely strong attack even in Delphox’s hands, and the good neutral coverage of Psychic on top of answering defensive Poison types make it a good move to spam repeatedly. Flamethrower is Delphox’s anti Steel option, being preferred for its reliability against threats like Kingambit and Mega Golisopod where missing can mean the end of the battle. Dazzling Gleam is coverage for non-Kingambit Dark types that otherwise wall off Expanding Force completely, preventing such threats from freely threatening Delphox, especially Hisuian-Samurott and Mega Gyarados who resist both of Delphox’s STABs. If one can find the time for it, Nasty Plot does remedy a lot of Delphox’s power issues, ensuring OHKOs on even neutral targets like Garchomp, Primarina, Mega Baxcalibur, and Mega Charizard Y. This can be hard to do while balancing Psychic Terrain’s time limit, though is made easier with Focus Sash to assure setup. Ability is up to preference. Blaze synergizes quite well with Focus Sash, giving Flamethrower considerable power, enabling OHKOs on Mega Metagross and Kingambit with unboosted Flamethrower. Magician also has utility once Focus Sash is expended, depriving opponents of their item and making them worse at their roles, though admittedly is more niche, especially in a format with Mega Stones.
Stats and Items:
Max Speed and Special Attack are highly recommended. Part of Delphox’s niche is its ability to outspeed the ubiquitous Garchomp (excepting the Z Mega Evolution and Scarf users) and with their base speeds being so close, it takes nothing less than 31 Speed and Timid to outrun Jolly Garchomp. Full investment also enables Delphox to outspeed the niche but dangerous Mega Excadrill as well as opposed to speed tying it. Full investment is to Special Attack, giving Delphox as much stopping power as possible and lessen its reliance on Nasty Plot to get knockouts. Focus Sash is recommended as the item. Delphox’s frailty is an issue and Focus Sash helps Delphox contribute against faster foes while also synergizing nicely with Psychic Terrain in that Delphox cannot be picked off by priority after being brought down to Focus Sash. The synergies with Magician are a nice bonus, giving Delphox so added item disruption.
Partners:
As this set revolves around Expanding Force spam, Indeedee is a mandatory partner, passively setting the Psychic Terrain that enables Delphox in the first place. While Delphox is in many ways redundant with Indeedee, both tend to provoke the same responses in Dark types, Steel types and Rillaboom, allowing Indeedee and Delphox to overwhelm their shared checks. The ability to easily remove Rillaboom is also invaluable in helping win the Terrain war for Indeedee.
Mega Golisopod also makes for a solid partner, its STAB Leech Life making quick work of most Dark types while having titanic defenses that make it great at pivoting into most threats to Delphox. In turn, Delphox is a soft check to opposing Fire types thanks to its own Fire typing and Psychic Terrain Expanding force enabling Delphox to overcome the mutual fire resistance. Mega Gyarados is another solid Mega Evolution partner, taking care of opposing Ghost types and Tyranitar with ease while being a solid Water and Dark pivot for Delphox’s many weaknesses. Delphox in turn better handles the Grass and Fairy type attacks that give Mega Gyarados problems post Mega Evolution.
Other Options:
If not using Delphox with Psychic Terrain, Psyshock and Psychic, are the preferred STAB options, the latter for subverting Special Sponges, the former for its slightly higher power.
Focus Blast is Delphox’s best option for handling bulky Dark types like Umbreon and Tyranitar who can soak up boosted Dazzling Gleams with ease.
Will-O-Wisp is a fantastic disruptive option that can defang threats like Garchomp and Tyranitar for the rest of the battle.
Encore is great for enabling allies to get in safely and punishing opponents trying to use Delphox to setup.
Wish pairs nicely with Encore if going all in on support to get an ally in safely..
Countering Delphox
Delphox’s dizzying array of moves and good speed can make it a difficult foe, but its lacking defenses make it a very squishy wizard.
Tyranitar and Umbreon remain the best checks to offensive Delphox, with their titanic special bulk and Psychic immunity allowing them to pivot in with ease, only fearing the rare Focus Blast. Tyranitar especially stands out thanks to also resisting Delphox’s boosted Fire STAB and its Sand Stream breaking Focus Sash on top of OHKOing with any of its STABs. Umbreon lacks these traits and can be threatened by boosted Flamethrowers (54-65%), but can outlast Delphox between Wish, Protect and Leftovers while Foul Play is a solid 2HKO. If lacking Dazzling Gleam and Focus Blast, Hydreigon is also a wall, with even +2 Flamethrower being an unlikely 35% to 2HKO. Mega Gyarados is another wall, receiving only 32-38% from +2 Flamethrower.
If lacking a Nasty Plot boost, the number of defensive Delphox checks increases. 32 HP Hisuian Goodra takes 27-32% from an unboosted Flamethrower while able to 2HKO back with Thunderbolt into Draco Meteor. 32 HP/32+ SDef Galarian-Slowking also does well, taking 41-49% from Expanding Force, which it can outlast with Slack Off and Leftovers while Sludge Bomb deals 36-43% back. 32 HP/29+ Special Defense Empoleon takes 26-31% from Flamethrower while dealing 76-91% from Surf. Mega Starmie also works well due to resisting both STABs, taking 43-50% from Expanding Force.
However, most defensive checks have to be wary of Delphox’s disruption, with few able to take an Encore, or Will-O-Wisp. As such, offensively checking Delphox is greatly preferred. While base Delphox is more likely to be in the priority denying Psychic Terrain, its Speed tier still leaves it out speed by many staples including Pawmot, Lycanroc-Dusk, Hisuian-Zoroark, Mega Lucario, Mega Salamence, Mega Froslass, Mega Starmie, Sneasler, Greninja, Meowscarada, Mega Gengar, Dragapultand Mega Absol Z, all of whom can remove Delphox with little fanfare.
Mega Delphox, the Fox Pokémon. It wields flaming branches to dazzle its opponents before incinerating them with a huge fireball.
Overview
After generations of conjuring in the shadows, Delphox’s new Mega Evolution has bespelled trainers the world over with its fantastic speed, offense and defensive profile. While base Delphox’s Speed was already impressive, Mega Delphox takes it to a new level. Base 134 Speed is blazingly fast even by the speed crept standards of the ninth generation, having Mega Delphox outrun Pokémon already famed for their speed like Mega Gengar and Mega Raichu Y. Mega Delphox weaponizes this speed to great effect, either crippling opponents with Encore or Will-O-Wisp or bringing the full might of its offense to bear on the opponent. At Base 159 Special Attack, that is a terrifying amount of power to be throwing around, especially with the always valuable Fire STAB, secondary Psychic STAB that hits most Fire resists for neutral and plentiful coverage options for just about everything that the STABs can’t. The ability to boost with Nasty Plot or Calm Mind just pushes this offensive over the edge. Yet what has Mega Delphox stand out from other similarly fast offensive Mega Evolutions is its defenses. Base 125 Special Defense is considerable, allowing Mega Delphox to ward off a myriad of special attacks especially given its resistances. Fire, Ice, Grass, Fairy, and Fighting are all prominent offensive types that Mega Delphox resists with ease and Levitate turning its Ground weakness into an immunity gives Mega Delphox plenty of defensive merit. This pays dividends for Mega Delphox, making it far easier to find opportunities to setup and ensuring it is not reliant on getting knock outs to excel.
For all the good that can be said about Mega Delphox’s special bulk, the same can’t be said about its physical durability. Delphox’s Defense is untouched when Mega Evolving leaving a massive weak point that can easily drop Mega Delphox with little effort. This gets worse when realizing despite Mega Delphox’s impressive array of resistances, its weaknesses to Water, Ghost, Dark and Rock are quite exploitable. While this frailty can be lessened by Mega Delphox’s impressive disruptive movepool, these tools are of little use if Mega Delphox can’t find the opportunity to use them. This makes popular Scarf users like Hydreigon, Stone Edge Garchomp, and Basculegion clean outs to what is otherwise supposed to be a game ending sweeper. The few other naturally faster Pokémon and most priority users can also make the most of Mega Delphox’s physical frailty and stop it before it begins. Mega Delphox is still an amazing Mega Evolution who demands respect for the spellfire it unleashes.
Positives
Base 134 Speed is ludicrous, being the 12th fastest in Champions as of the time of this writing, with scarce few new and old able to outspeed.
Base 159 Special borders on the absurd, and with boosting options in Nasty Plot and Calm Mind, Mega Delphox is not wanting for power.
Base 125 Special Defense is considerable, allowing Mega Delphox to absorb a special blow or two.
Fantastic movepool stuffed with STABs, coverage and disruptive options.
Fire Psychic typing with Levitate offers plenty of valuable resistances
Negatives
Fire Psychic typing also comes with common weaknesses to Ghost, Dark, Water and Stealth Rock.
75/72 physical bulk is poor, having Mega Delphox fall quickly to most physical attackers
Much less impressive if speed is overcome.

Timid Nature
Mega Delphox’s makes for one of the one of the most effective Nasty Plot sweepers in the game, its fantastic base speed meaning it does need a speed boost to run over most teams. Mega Delphox’s good special defense and array of resistances help immensely in this regard, allowing it to turn Fairy, Fire, Grass types into setup fodder, along with select Psychic types like Mega Metagross, and Indeedee-M. Fire Blast is primary STAB for its immense power, and invaluable coverage, melting the Steel typed bulwarks that compose the backbones of many teams as well as being the best answer into physically Defensive Clefable Psyshock is the secondary STAB option that is great for handling most Fire resistances, while being much better into opposing Calm Mind users like Mega Floette, as well as the specially Defensive Mega Charizard Y. Dazzling Gleam rounds out the set as anti Dark and anti Dragon coverage, handling troublesome foes like Umbreon, Hydreigon, and to a lesser extent, Tyranitar.
Stats and Items:
Max Speed and Special Attack investment is perfectly viable for Mega Delphox. Mega Delphox being able to outspeed base 130s like Mega Gengar is a huge strength, turning a would be bad matchup into an extremely advantageous one for Mega Delphox. Furthermore, while Base 134 Speed is fantastic, even going down to a speed neutral nature leaves Mega Delphox exposed not only to Mega Gengar, but also the base 120 crowd, including Mega Salamence, Mega Starmie, and Sneasler. Lowest recommended Speed investment is 29 Speed with Timid, as that ensures Mega Delphox still outstrips base 130s. Full Special Attack investment is valuable too, ensuring Fire Blast deals 58-68% to 32 HP/2 SDef Unaware Clefable for a solid 2HKO and deal 57-68% to 32 HP/2 SDef Mega Tyranitar with +2 Dazzling Gleam. However, Mega Delphox will 2HKO Mega Tyaranitar with even 3 SAtk +2 Dazzling Gleam. This allows considerable space for HP and Defense investment, making Mega Delphox that much more likely to survive errant priority and greatly facilitates setup. 4 HP and 4 Defense is enough to survive Jolly Garchomp’s Outrage.
Partners:
Given Mega Delphox’s issues with naturally faster attackers, having allies that can check them are ideal. One way is to fight speed with speed. Scarf Meowscarada is a strong option due to forming Grass-Fire and Dark-Psychic cores with Mega Delphox, allowing it to quickly clean up the likes of Scarf Hydreigon, Dragapult, Mega Greninja, as well as Mega Garchomp Z with Protean Triple Axel. The ability to remove or compromise Water, Ghost and Dragon types as well as Mega Tyranitar is invaluable in enabling setup or for Mega Delphox to simply go on the offensive. Primarina is a more defensive answer to such fast attackers, especially priority like Sucker Punch from Kingambit and Aqua Jet from Hisuian-Samurott and Mega Starmie, while finishing the Grass-Fire-Water core. Scarf Garchomp also handles Dragapult and Scarf Hydreigon with its Dragon STAB, while its Ground STAB is fantastic at thrashing the likes of Tyranitar. The Ice and Fairy attacks that Garchomp draws in are also easy entry points for Mega Delphox.
Allies that check or counter physical attackers are also ideal given that is one of Mega Delphox’s biggest weakpoints. Archaludon stands out, its Stamina ability allowing it to gain momentum switching into physical attacks meant for Mega Delphox, especially Rock ones, as well as Dragon Tail to punish opposing setup sweepers and Stealth Rocks to facilitate sweeps. In turn, Mega Delphox pivots into special attacks with ease, especially the Ground and Fighting attacks that otherwise give Archaludon pause. Hippowdon trades the offensive presence of Archaludon for sheer durability, though being able to check Hisuian Goodra is a nice bonus.
Other Options:
Flamethrower is reliable Fire STAB if one does not want to risk a Fire Blast miss.
Psychic is great for handling high Defense Fire resists like Mega Salamence and has a slight power boost over Psyshock.
Encore is a fantastic move for locking opponents into detrimental attacks like Garchomp and Earthquake for easy setup as well as help play around Sucker Punch from Kingambit and Mega Golisopod.
Substitute is also a great option to play around Sucker Punches as well as block Thunder Wave from the likes of Grimmsnarl.
Will-O-Wisp addresses Mega Delphox’s poor Defense and can weaken targets for Mega Delphox’s allies.
Grass Knot threatens Hippowdon without needing Nasty Plot, but Hippowdon struggles to directly handle Mega Delphox without Stone Edge.
Shadow Ball is Mega Delphox’s best option for opposing Mega Delphox and Skeledirge.
Focus Blast is notable for cleaning OHKOing Tyranitar, an otherwise solid check to Mega Delphox.
Doubles and VGC Options
Mega Delphox’s excellent traits have also led it to excel in VGC. Base 134 Speed can outrun entire teams lacking speed control, and Delphox can easily make massive progress with not only strong single target attacks, but STAB spread options, namely Heat Wave. This is a massive amount of offensive pressure, that gets further amplified by Nasty Plot, leaving Mega Delphox a potent win condition that must be respected. Add in good defensive utility between its typing and levitate causing Delphox to wall staples like Rillaboom, PsySpam teams, Fairies like Sylveon and Mega Floette, Mega Charizard Y, and not only is Mega Delphox a deadly threat, but one that is difficult to remove. Even the fac that Mega Delphox cannot benefit from Psychic Terrain due to Levitate for both Expanding Force and priority protection is merely a footnote to the havoc it can wreak. What is problematic is Mega Delphox’s poor matchups into common staples like Kingambit, Basculegion and doubles king Incineroar, the former two offensive and the latter defensively checking Mega Delphox. Mega Delphox’s poor Defense can make it quite volatile in certain matchups despite its otherwise respectable defensive profile, requiring game to game management to get the most out of it.

Timid Nature
Nasty Plot Mega Delphox has made a name for itself on setup oriented teams, packing multiple setup sweepers along with support with to facilitate such setup, popularized by Mao Harada. Nasty Plot does a lot for Mega Delphox pushing even neutral single target STABs into OHKOs, while its Heat Waves eclipse Mega Charizard Y's in power. Of course, Mega Delphox can deal a lot of damage even without setup, so known when to setup and when to go on the offensive is vital. Heat Wave is the preferred Fire STAB for Mega Delphox for its spread capabilities. With this Delphox can pile on terrifying amounts of damage to the opposing team incredibly quickly and is invaluable into the scores of Fire weak Mega Evolutions and support pieces like Rillaboom, Kingambit, Mega Golisopod, Whimsicott, Sinistcha, Mega Metagross, Venusaur, and more. Psychic and Psyshock are the Psychic STAB options of choice, helping get around Wide Guard users and hitting many Fire-resistant Water, Fire and Dragon types, allowing Mega Delphox to continue its offensive pressure. Where Psychic and Psyshock differ is who they check. Psychic does better into high Defense targets like Mega Salamence, Torkoal and Kommo-o while Psyshock is better against Calm Mind users like Mega Floette, as well as bulky Mega Charizard Y. Protect rounds out the set as the Doubles staple, blocking opposing Fake Outs, stalling for allied setup, stalling out detrimental field conditions and more.
Max Speed and Special Attack are recommended. The goal of Mega Delphox is to hit as hard and fast as possible. Timid with max Speed allows Mega Delphox to outrun base 130 Pokémon like Mega Gengar and Mega Raichu Y as well as faster Pokémon looking to speed creep them like Mega Garchomp Z and Mega Lucario Z. It is hard to recommend a nature other than Timid, as that drops Mega Delphox below positive Speed natured base 120s like Mega Salamence and Mega Froslass. If looking for a little extra bulk, 29 Speed with Timid is the bare minimum to outrun base 130s. That can come in handy, with 2 HP and 2 Defense being enough to ensure that a Timid 0 Attack Mega Salamence's Double Edge cannot OHKO Mega Delphox. If looking for a bit more bulk, 9 HP and 14 Defense is a popular array, enough to survive Naive Mega Salamence's Double Edge, Mega Golisopod's Leech Life, and Mega Staraptor's Brave Bird, making it that much easier to setup or launch an offensive.
Preferred Partners & Other Options:
Fake Out users are highly recommended for Nasty Plot Delphox, making it that much easier to set up. Incineroar is unsurprisingly the best, Intimidate doing so much in addressing Mega Delphox's physical frailty and the Helping Hand boost instrument in picking up surprise knockouts. Sneasler is also excellent, thanks to outspeeding most Fake Out users and threatening opposing Incineroar and other Dark types (like Tyrannitar) with STAB Close Combat. Rillaboom also works in this role, as while Mega Delphox does not benefit from Grassy Terrain, its love Rillaboom's ability to eat Basculegion alive with Grassy Glide.
Sinsitcha is also notable for faciliating Nasty Plot setup with its Rage Powder, drawing in Water and single target Rock attacks into it, while Hospitality and possibly Life Dew keeps Mega Delphox around longer and makes it less vulnerable to being worn down.
Kingambit is a popular partner as a secondary setup sweeper, allowing it to soften up teams for Mega Delphox's sweep or clean up what Mega Delphox has started while being a soft deterrent for Incineroar. Its fantastic bulk and Dark typing are amazing for pivoting into predicted Ghost, Dark and Rock attacks aimed at Mega Delphox, while Mega Delphox readily thrashes most Fighting and Fire types with ease. Mega Blastoise also fills a similar role as a secondary setup Mega Evolution when going up against Rain teams or teams that are packed with too many Fire resists.
Encore is an amazing disruptive option in Doubles and Mega Delphox stands out as one of the fastest users, able to lock the likes of Incineroar into Fake Out or Kingambit into Sucker Punch, making such threats much easier to deal with and setup on.
Substitute is a more direct way of blocking Kingambit's Sucker Punch.
Will-O-Wisp is hard to fit but is great for stopping the many physical attackers looking to check Mega Delphox.
Countering Mega Delphox
Mega Delphox’s speed, power and defenses make for a difficult spell to navigate, albeit not impossible.
For defensive checks, Tyranitar stands out as one of the best, its Sandstorm boosted Special Defense and typing make it so even +2 Dazzling Gleam fails to OHKO offensive Tyranitar, let alone 32 HP Mega Tyranitar (57-68%), while easily OHKOing with STABs. Only the rare Focus Blast and Will-O-Wisp give Mega Tyranitar pause. On Mega Delphox lacking Nasty Plot or Focus Blast, Umbreon does well, with Flamethrower only dealing 34-41% and Dazzling Gleam dealing 41-49%, easily outlasted by Protect and Wish while Foul Play is a solid 2HKO. Hisuian-Goodra also does well against unboosted Mega Delphox, with Flamethrower only doing 34-40%, but can struggle to deal damage back with Thunderbolt (27-33%) into Draco Meteor (60-71%) being a very unlikely knock out. Specially Defensive 32 HP/20 SDef Skeledirge conversely handles Nasty Plot Delphox lacking Shadow Ball with ease, though must be wary of Encore wasting valuable PP. 32 HP Leftovers Clefable can outstrip Fire Blast lacking Mega Delphox with Calm Mind boosts (initial Falmethrower dealing 47-56%), but it will need at least 3 Calm Minds in order to 3HKO Mega Delphox, giving a lot of time for a crit and again hates Encore. If lacking Dazzling Gleam and Focus Blast Hydreigon hard walls Mega Delhpox’s STABs and other coverage options while 2HKOing with Dark Pulse. Ironically enough, opposing Mega Delphox are difficult to deal with, especially if they are running Shadow Ball. If lacking Psyshock, Primarina can tank a +2 Psychic (83-99%) and OHKO back with Hyper Voice.
Offensively checking Mega Delphox can be more manageable given its low Defense. Scarf Meowscarada, Mega Greninja, Phantom Force Dragapult, and Mega Absol Z all outrun Mega Delphox and remove it with ease. Sucker Punch users like Kingambit, Cinderace, Mega Mawile and Mega Golisopod can cleanly remove Mega Delphox, though must be wary of anti Sucker Punch measures like Will-O-Wisp, Encore and Substitute. Mimikyu is as always a solid check to setup sweepers with its Disguise and can easily get the OHKO with 32 Attack Life Orb Shadow Claw. Aqua Jet users like Basculegion and Mega Starmie can also remove Mega Delphox, though the former only does 74-87% and thus needs Mega Delphox to be chipped first.
