The Nintendo DS was another Nintendo portable device. Released in 2004, it was positioned as a third pillar for Nintendo before it replaced the Game Boy Advance. The Nintendo DS featured a return to the 2 screen concept that Nintendo had used with the Game & Watch and allowed for games to use both screens for gameplay or one for a map with the other having gameplay, with the bottom screen being a resistive touch screen. It was also the first Nintendo portable device to have native online features through the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. The Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite models also included a Game Boy Advance slot to allow for gameplay and connectivity with Game Boy Advance titles

Its first interaction with the Pokémon franchise was with the spin-off Pokémon Dash which utilised the touch screen for control but the first main series games came 2 years later with Pokémon Diamond & Pearl
