Wild Pokémon Mechanics

Pokémon Legends Z-A, as it's a Pokémon Legends game, has got a different system for wild Pokémon than its predecessors.

Spawns

A the game takes place in Lumiose City rather than a sprawling wilderness region, the wild Pokémon spawns are somewhat different than before. In this game, there are 20 different Wild Zones where a massive amount of Pokémon spawn, but throughout the city in general Pokémon will spawn on rooftops, in streets and in parks.

Rather than there being a myriad of spawns throughout the city, the spawn points are fairly fixed and typically just have one or two possibilities, with some changing based on time of day and weather. You can cycle through the spawns by flying away and back again, or sitting on a bench to change the time of day from Day to Night.

When you defeat a Pokémon, that spawn point is on cooldown for a short amount of time and when you catch it, it is on cooldown for longer. This cooldown is real-time in actual gameplay; any time spent in a menu is not counted.

Pokémon will react to your presence, with the reactions being different based on species. Some Pokémon, when they spot you, will being attacking you while others will run away and despawn.

Catching Pokémon

Catching Pokémon works in a similar manner to Pokémon Legends: Arceus. In this game, you have the ability to target the Pokémon and throw a Poké Ball at any time. However, if a Pokémon gets enraged, which can happen after a few failed captures, then you will not be able to throw a Poké Ball

If you strike a Pokémon unaware from behind with a backstrike, it has an increased chance of being caught.

When you target a Pokémon down, you will see arrows next to them which help indicate the chance of capture. The more arrows that are displayed, the better the chance.

If the capture fails, you can battle the Pokémon to take its Hit Points down. After defeating it, for the first time you get a small window where you can attempt to catch the Pokémon.

As always, the chance of capture varies on a variety of factors. Alpha Pokémon tend to be harder to catch and Pokémon Level is valid. Your current Z-A Royale rank also factors in to the catch chance with higher level Pokémon being harder to catch.

Shiny Pokémon also have an increased base bonus to catch on *3 from the Base Catch Rate.

Finally, getting the Blue Canari Plush adds an additional bonus to the capture chance
